WHO supports Seychelles on People-Centred Care

WHO supported a two day symposium on 15th and 16th of July 2016 in the Seychelles, which aimed to familiarize health care team with the concepts of patient-centred care, and agree on the application of patient-centred care mechanisms, taking cognizance of the Seychelles context. The symposium was attended by 180 participants, drawn from the respective health professions, policy makers in health, patient care groups, and media stakeholders. The facilitation was led by Dr. Delanyo Dovlo, Director of Health Systems and Services in AFRO and included Nuria Toro Polanco from WHO/Geneva Service Delivery team.

World Health Assembly approves Framework

From 23 to 28 May 2016, Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) met in Geneva for the Sixty-ninth World Health Assembly and approved with overwhelming support the resolution “strengthening integrated, people-centred health services” that supports the Framework on integrated, people-centred health services (IPCHS).

The Resolution was proposed by Andorra, Chile, Estonia, Finland, Japan, Latvia, Liberia, Luxembourg and Thailand as co-sponsoring countries and received additional inputs from India, Zimbabwe and Canada. WHO global strategy becomes “Framework on integrated people-centred health services”

In March 2015, WHO published the interim report called "WHO global strategy on people-centred and integrated health services". This interim strategy was made up of two linked documents: 1) the strategy itself, which presents a compelling case for an integrated, people-centred health services approach, along with a look at the way forward, and 2) an overview of good practice, which contains a number of case studies and the evidence on the benefits that integrated, people-centred care can bring to people, communities and countries.

Framework on integrated people-centred health services supports the Sustainable Development Goals

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a target on universal health coverage. The Framework is fully aligned with this global movement.

In September 2015, countries adopted the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 3 relates to ensuring healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages and its target 3.8 puts forward the aim of achieving universal health coverage. WHO's Executive Board discusses Framework

On 28 January 2016, the Executive Board (EB) of the World Health Organization (WHO) discussed the Framework on integrated people-centred health services.

The Framework received broad support to be noted by the 69th Session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) that will take place in May 2016; furthermore its accompanying draft resolution was approved as amended by the EB.

Both the Framework and its accompanying draft resolution received positive feedback during the discussion. Numerous member states expressed their support, emphasizing the need for an integrated, people-centred approach to organizing, managing and delivering health services around the world.
