Policy makers have been aspiring to a ‘patient-centred NHS’ in England for at least 20 years. In 2008, patient experience became a key part of the national definition of quality in healthcare; and in 2012 that was codified in law.
Person-centred care has become an increasingly prominent stated ambition both of national policy and local practice. The Primary Care Home programme has gathered huge momentum since its inception in autumn 2015. From 15 original rapid test sites– they now have more than 190 sites across England, covering eight million patients– 14 per cent of the population.

Developing accountable care systems: lessons from Canterbury, New Zealand

The health system in Canterbury, New Zealand, has undertaken a significant programme of transformation over the past decade. Change was achieved through developing a number of new delivery models, which involve better integration of care across organisational and service boundaries, increased investment in community-based services, and strengthening primary care. The experience in Canterbury offers useful lessons for the NHS in terms of how to redesign care in this way. Key approaches ...

A Digital NHS? An introduction to the digital agenda and plans for implementation

In recent years, the digital agenda in health care has been the subject of an array of promises and plans, ranging from the Secretary of State’s challenge to the NHS to ‘go paperless’ to the commitment set out in the NHS’s Five Year Forward View to ‘harness the information revolution’.
