Person-centred care and short oral treatment for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis improve retention in care in Kandahar, Afghanistan

Aknowledging that people living with TB face multiple challenges in addition to TB disease and that better access to new diagnostic or treatment tools alone cannot improve RR-TB care outcomes, person-centred care has been introduced as one of the pillars of the EndTB strategy, which calls for integration of health services, inclusion of social support as part of clinical care. Therefore, person-centred care delivery and treatment regimens were adapted to better fit specific contextual challenges and the needs of the target population, retention in care improved among people with RR-TB in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

STEPS – a patient centric and low-cost solution to ensure standards of TB care to patients reaching private sector in India

More than half of the TB patients in India seek care from the private sector. Two decades of attempts by the National TB Program to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors have not worked except in a few innovative pilots. Malaria amongst febrile children: call for a pediatric malaria assessment tool

In 2017, malaria accounted for 435 000 deaths worldwide. Eleven percent (11%) of these deaths occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where malaria continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Children are amongst the most vulnerable to malaria, which causes 40% of childhood deaths in the country. A pediatric malaria assessment tool incorporating socio-demographics, symptoms and physical exam findings may guide investigations to reduce unnecessary testing and provide better patient-centred care.
