Realising the value of integrated care in Australia beyond

PROFESSOR NICK GOODWIN, Director, Central Coast Research Institute for Integrated Care, University of Newcastle and Central Coast LHD. Co-Founder, International Foundation for Integrated Care

Over the past decade there has been a growing realisation of the need to reform health and care systems in Australia to better coordinate care, improve quality and promote value.

For example, recent reports such as the 2017 Productivity Commission’s Shifting the Dial and the 2018 CSIRO report Future of Health criticised the existing disease-based, episodic, medicallydominated and institutionally- led characteristics of the Australian health system as being unable to respond effectively to the new challenges of age-related chronic illnesses and the very high percentage of Australians living in ill-health.

Shared Governance: Working Together to Enable People-Centred Integrated Care

Now more than ever, healthcare systems and communities must work together to improve outcomes for patients, caregivers and populations. Shared governance is an essential piece of the journey towards an integrated, people-centred health system; one that must be co-designed in partnership to breakdown barriers in care.

Join this session to learn from the first-hand experiences from a patient partner, a senior health care leader, a Canadian policy maker and an international expert, as they discuss:

• Examples of how shared governance models have been co-designed to enable collaborative, people-centred health systems across the continuum of care; and
• Key practices and implementation resources based on the latest evidence.

Health services delivery: a concept note

In order for health services delivery to accelerate gains in health outcomes it must continuously adapt and evolve according to the changing health landscape. At present, the case for change is a compelling one. However, despite mounting attention put to reforming health services delivery, there remains a persisting lack of consensus on its conceptualization. This paper aims to take stock of the developments in the literature on health services delivery and lessons from the firsthand experiences of countries, viewing clarity on the performance, processes and system dynamics of health services delivery a prerequisite for the rollout, scale-up and sustainability of reforms. Through a mixed-methods approach, evidence from existing frameworks and tools for measuring services delivery, country case examples and commissioned papers have been reviewed around three key questions: what are the outcomes of health services delivery? How can the health services delivery function be defined? And, how do other health ...
