Welcome to the Community of Practice for the WHO Global Learning Laboratory (GLL) for Quality Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The GLL is deeply rooted in the five interwoven strategies of the Integrated People Centred Health Services Framework—engaging and empowering people and communities; strengthening governance and accountability; reorienting health services; strengthening coordination of care and creating an enabling environment. The GLL recognizes the key role of people-centred health services in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UHC.

The GLL highlights the need to focus care on the needs and preferences of people. To this end, the GLL aims to create a safe space to share lessons, experiences and ideas; challenge those ideas and spark innovation on quality within the content of UHC. Implementing clinical audits to improve care standards in Turkey

Clinical audits were implemented to improve adherence to national guidelines through increasing transparency and accountability for service delivery across health care institutions; lengthy discussions with stakeholders and clear communication of the initiative’s aims were essential for establishing sufficient buy-in to begin implementation; establishing data collection and analysis systems was a critical step for improving and optimizing care. Strong data collection, followed up with monitoring and evaluation, was paramount to the initiative’s success; while the initiative was led by the Ministry of Health, regional health authorities played an increasingly important role in supporting auditing processes and providing local oversight of audited institutions as the initiative expanded.

How do we know? An assessment of integrated community case management data quality in four districts of Malawi

The World Health Organization contracted annual data quality assessments of Rapid Access Expansion (RAcE) proyects to review integrated community case management (iCCM) data quality and the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system for iCCM, adn to suggest ways to improve data quality. 

This data quality assessment illuminates where an otherwise strong M&E system for iCCM fails to ensure some aspects of data quality. Prioritizing data management with documented protocols, additional training and approaches to create efficient supervision practices may improve iCCM data quality.

The global community is presented with an unprecedented challenge and an opportunity: to avert a potential 18 million health worker shortfall and shape increasing demand for additional health and social workforce jobs. In doing so, we will make progress towards universal health coverage and global health security while also contributing to gains across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (e.g. quality education, gender equality, reduced inequalities, decent jobs and inclusive economic growth).

The sixth annual PCPCC report, authored by the Robert Graham Center of the American Academy of Family Physicians and published with support from the Milbank Memorial Fund, employed broader search terms and more rigorous search criteria that evaluated studies, reports, and evaluations published between November 1, 2015 to February 28, 2017. Integrated care: better and cheaper

Integrated care improves health, increases quality of care and lowers costs. These three goals, this Triple Aim in other words, are achieved in many examples from all over the world: from Alaska to New Zealand, from Western Europe to South Africa. However, disseminating all these good examples is easier said than done, as nationwide implementation means the simultaneous realisation of the following six components of integrated care:

1. Multidisciplinary care pathways and decision trees

2. Patient self-management and shared decision-making by patients and professionals

3. Guaranteeing professional and patient- perceived quality

4. Population-based funding and shared savings

5. An Electronic Health Record and e-health

6. Servant leadership and a strategy for change management.

Exploring the Quality Paradigms in Integrated Care: The Need for Emergence and Reflection

There are four quality paradigms, of which the Empirical and Reference paradigm fit best in stable circumstances, and the Reflective and Emergence paradigms, which fit best in unstable circumstances.

This study aims to explore the use of the four quality paradigms in integrated care, and to shed light on the different paradigmatic commitments and different perspectives on quality.
